Tell us a little about you and your background.
With a career spanning over a decade in the fashion industry, Cody’s eye for detail, colour and texture afforded him the opportunities to work on major fashion projects, editorials and runway shows – with this skill set now translating to him being the Senior Trend Hunter for the Pet Atelier.
Tell us about your business.
The Pet Atelier is focused on creating lux pet products from the finest leathers and materials that not only reflect the style of the owner, but the personality of the dog.
What inspired you to start your business?
It wasn’t until his babe, Lily, arrived that he realised that not every industry was as fashion forward as first thought – especially the pet industry! Disillusioned by the standard pink and blue nylon collars and stock standard ‘cutesy’ prints, he set out to create something new – something fresh – something fashion.
What makes your products unique?
All of The Pet Atelier’s leather and denim collars and leads are designed, sourced and handcrafted within a 50km radius of Melbourne with a strong focus on supporting local business through beneficial partnerships. Our bandanas are proudly printed, cut and sewn by hand and shipped directly from our partner studio in the USA.
What has been the best thing about running your business so far?
The creative control – being able to truly deliver on trend designs and pieces has been so much fun, but aside from that, I’ve met some wonderful owners (and dogs) who have helped shape the business into what it is today.
What is your favourite product?
Without a doubt, our new season (spring summer 17/18) collection of bandanas – I’m so unbelievably happy with the design and aesthetic we have created with this new collection.
Have you had any major challenges?
Being able to identify gaps in the pet industry is an on going challenge, but it is one that I enjoy. There is always a new product, design or style to bring to market, but identifying when to do so can be the make or break for the product.
