“In 2015 my family and I adopted Miss Drew, a little 7 month old girl pug, that truly changed my life for the better and would inspire me to finally follow the path of where I am today. Not long after she came into our lives I started Miss Drew’s Bakery Dog Treats as a hobby on the side. This allowed me to get creative sourcing Australian human grade ingredients that not only were safe for dogs to eat but also I wanted to create treats for special occasions like birthdays. Even dogs need to be spoilt on their special day! I started out baking in my kitchen and soon was struggling for more space so I set up a home bakery. At the start of this year I opened my little retro inspired dog only cafe on the Mornington Peninsula and every weekend I’m serving pugicinos, meaty muffins, pies, cookies, pug beer and hosting custom puppy parties.
During the week I bake at home for online orders, custom cakes, wholesale order and at the cafe on the weekends I get to play and serve dogs… it’s the pawfect job!”
“I’m always working to improve my designs, recipes and try to have a different style from other products on the market. There are so many amazing dog bakers in Australia that all create something different from the next. For me I think my custom work is what makes me unique I love being able to spend more time on adding those little special touches. ” she says.
One of the best things Kim loves about running her business is getting to be around dogs all the time. “This business has allowed me to push myself to become more creative than I thought I could be. I get to be apart of a new type of pet industry that have many wonderful small, local and Australian businesses that are supportive and all have the same goal to bring the best products for the fur-babies of Australia.”
Kim’s favourite products are her cakes. “This allows me to be the most creative and nothing is better than seeing a pooch tuck into their very own doggy birthday cake. ” she says
Like all businesses Kim did a lot of research before selling her treats to the public. “There was lots and lots of research to be done, testing recipes, lots of failed attempts and many batches of cookies in the bin. Once I was confident that I had created a good base for my recipes, setting up the business and creating my own style was the next step. With any business big or small there will always be times you wonder is it all worth the hard work but if you truly love what you do you push through and find your way.”
